Recreational Pilots Licence (RPL)
The RPL is a basic pilot licence that allows you to fly light aircraft for recreational purposes within 25 nautical miles of the departure aerodrome. Further flights are permitted with certain endorsements. It is less demanding in terms of training and medical requirements compared to the PPL.
Age
You must be at least 16 years old to obtain an RPL.
Medical Certificate
You need at least a CASA Class 2 medical certificate.
Alternatively, a Basic Class 2 medical certificate issued by a General Practitioner (GP) can be used for private operations.
Training Hours
A minimum of 25 flight hours, which includes:
- 15 hours of dual flight instruction (flying with an instructor)
- 5 hours of solo flight time
Private Pilots Licence (PPL)
Age
You must be at least 17 years old to obtain an PPL
Medical Certificate
You need at least a CASA Class 2 medical certificate.
Training Hours
A minimum of 40 flight hours, which includes:
- 20 hours of dual flight instruction
- 10 hours of solo flight time, including at least 5 hours of solo cross-country flight
Why CASA
Part 141 training is overseen by CASA, and meeting their requirements ensures you are trained and qualified to operate aircraft safely within the specified privileges of each licence.
Which one is best for me?
- The RPL in Australia is a great option for those who wish to fly recreationally with minimal training and medical requirements.
- The PPL offers more extensive flying privileges, including the ability to fly internationally and add advanced ratings, but it requires more rigorous training and examinations.
